Afghanistan: “Universal Deceit”

Spurs Afghan Freedom
By General Mirza Aslam Beg
The indomitable will to preserve freedom, is the distinctive feature of the psyche of the Afghan nation, which has been misconstrued by foreign aggressors as ‘terrorism,’ during the last thirty years. Under this misconception, the Soviets manipulated entry into Afghanistan during the seventies, promising social equality and freedom, but ended up with forced occupation of the country. This was the First Betrayal. The Americans and the Pakistanis joined hands to defeat the Soviet aggression and promised freedom, but turned their back on the Afghans, when the Soviets retreated, and created conditions of a civil war. This was the Second Betrayal. The Taliban resistance, grew out of this deceit and gained control over 90% of Afghanistan, when the Americans and their allies, joined by Pakistan, struck Afghanistan to avenge the 9/11 massacre, although not a single Afghan was involved in this dastardly action of 9/11, yet they were found guilty of harbouring Osama and were so brutally punished. This was the Third Betrayal. The Americans and the allies, cheated them, the Fourth time at Bonn in 2002, when the Taliban – the Pakhtun majority were denied their due share in the so called national government, formed at Kabul. The Afghans, having learnt the bitter lesson of one deceit after another, are not prepared to be hoodwinked again in the name of freedom. The crafty deception now being worked-out by the aggressors is worth examining.
The rule of game is indeed ironic that, the winners, lay down the conditions for peace, yet the loosers – the Americans and their allies are trying to determine their own rules for peace. The Maldives Plan was hatched and the declaration was made from Washington, that they would prefer “a peaceful non-Talibanized Afghanistan”, which was also endorsed by Pakistan. Therefore, it was decided to induct thirty thousand more troops in Afghanistan in order to gain “a position of strength to be able to negotiate peace.” The Taliban, however, responded to the surge, causing heavy casualties, thus denying the “position of strength” to the adversary. Out of sheer desperation, therefore, the Americans tried to throw the blame on Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence, supporting the so called ‘safe havens in the tribal areas.’ Hillary Clinton charge sheeted Pakistan, which General Mullen also endorsed. The new Prime Minister of United Kingdom Mr. Cameron, joined the chorus, and going a step further, demanded that such havens in Pakistan must be bombed-out. But desperation doesn’t help in such conditions, such as, General Petraeus statement that “I am not here to seek a graceful exit,” while the Afghan militants are “fighting back at this very pivotal moment to outclass us through this fighting season.” General Petraeus may be sounding brave, but Americans and the allies, having realized that they cannot win by force, have ultimately commissioned Karzai to seek peace with the Taliban.
Karzai has played his cards well. During the last peace conference at Kabul, attended by seventy countries. Karzai succeeded in gaining acceptance of the two demands of the Taliban, that: ‘the occupation forces will leave by mid 2011; the Taliban leaders declared as terrorists be de-listed, and Taliban prisoners get released.’ The two follow-up demands related to cease-fire and calling a Loe-jirga, to decide the formation of the future broad-based national government.
These developments have had a demoralizing impact on India and Russia, who saw their game in Afghanistan, as lost and are feverishly working towards forming a coalition, together with Iran, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to prop-up the Northern Alliance, as they did in 1992 under Ahmad Shah Masud. But the ground realities are very much different now. The Northern Alliance will not be able to ride the American or Russian tanks to achieve victory in Kabul and Kandahar, as both the super powers have faced defeat at the hands of the Afghans. The Taliban of today are a different breed altogether. Thy have thirty years of experience of hard fighting. They enjoy unity of command under Mullah Omar. The hard-core of their fighting strength mainly consists of young fighters, born during the last thirty years and having grown under the shadows of war, know nothing but to fight for their freedom, against the occupation forces. These hard-core fighters symbolize the ‘unshakable will of the Afghan nation’, to fight and continue fighting till they achieve the final victory. They have, in fact written new doctrine of war, the asymmetric war, by defeating two super powers in a short period of thirty years, which indeed is a miracle of the century.
Those, who are now planning to disrupt the peace process, initiated by Karzai and accepted by the Americans, argue that: “The US must not withdraw from Afghanistan and continue to occupy the pivot of three Asias for geo-strategic gains and world domination. Though the apparent logic and hindrance in this policy may be Pakistan’s fixation with India, it actually boils down to the growing strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. This is what makes the present crises ‘A Long War.” This is a myopic perception of reality, which needs renunciation to determine a strategic new-look, because the world has yet to device a strategy to win against the Afghans, who have developed the ‘asymmetric war techniques,’ to perfection, by defeating the high-tech superiority of weapon and equipment of the most powerful nations of the world.
Reintegrating the Pashtuns into the society would be the key to ensuing a viable Afghanistan. This would spare USA, the indignity of another Vietnam like retreat and would shift the perspective for a “global game” where USA’s soft-power would harmonize with the opposing ideology, giving the call of Allah-o-Akbar from Ground Zero, Islamic Cultural Centre, to be established under the momentous decision by President Obama, thus “removing one of the many paradoxes at the heart of the increasing passioned controversy.”
The lurking fear, that, once the Taliban are in power in Afghanistan, they would export their ideology and would threaten regional peace, is totally unfounded. In fact, having suffered so much in the last thirty years they are yearning for peace, which can be ensured only through maintaining friendly relations with all their neighbours and keeping away from regional intrigues and global power politics of competing powers. Despite all the sufferings at the hands of the Soviets, the Americans, their allies and the neighbours, the Afghan desperately need the support of all of them to rebuild the devastated country. And yet they would reject, interference, intrigues and efforts to play a dominating role in Afghanistan, by the neighbours in particular and the regional powers engaged in their “New Great Game.”
Afghans became, a victim of the Great Game of the twentieth century and now they desire to live in peace, protecting their core values, traditions, and the Islamic ideology – the raison detre’ of the nation. Afghanistan does not nourish any territorial ambition, but would jealously guard the dignity and pride of the nation. “It would not fear to negotiate peace, but will not do it out of ‘fear’”, as the charismatic leader of USA, John F. Kennedy said in his famous inaugural address: “Having being subjected to several deceits and distortions, no one can distract us from unearthing the reality and truth.” George Orwell endorsed the idea: “In time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary step.” This is what modern Afghanistan symbolizes.

General Aslam Beg revealed all a true story to mark an end in Afghanistan crisis. He mentioned correctly
” Afghans became, a victim of the Great Game of the twentieth century and now they desire to live in peace, protecting their core values, traditions, and the Islamic ideology – the raison detre’ of the nation. Afghanistan does not nourish any territorial ambition, but would jealously guard the dignity and pride of the nation.”
Actually India is keep trying to secure its interests in the war torn country as well as old enemy of Afghanistan the Russians is trying to keep Afghanistan insecure state to take a revenge from American and Afghans.Russians didn’t forget the tooth-breaking defeat. Iran is a key enemy of peace and security of Afghanistan.
Americans should rethink on Afghanistan and negotiate with the Taliban fighters. as General Aslam, ” although not a single Afghan was involved in this dastardly action of 9/11, yet they were found guilty of harbouring Osama and were so brutally punished. This was the Third Betrayal. The Americans and the allies, cheated them, the Fourth time at Bonn in 2002, when the Taliban – the Pakhtun majority were denied their due share in the so called national government, formed at Kabul.”

VERY GOOD ARTICLE!
Finally, finally some strong Truth on this thorny topic.
I like seeing the caption ‘Taliban Freedom Fighter’.
That’s what they ARE, despite all the masses of propaganda from all sides to turn them into international villians.
The Taliban are only local, as the General so well points out, with domestic aims for Afghanistan.
One can deduce that all the American refusal to directly give any recognition or status to the more determined fighters is merely a delaying tactic to reap more of the hidden rewards during their sojourn in Afghanistan.
That, plus fear of loss of face if American leaders are seen to be negotiating with Real Taliban, not the fakes that showed up for talks so far.
And yes, the role of Iran if that is what it really is, is highly disappointing. How could Teheran work together with Russia on Afghanistan after being a vehement opponent of the Soviet war there in the 80s.
I myself mentioned in a report that the Islamic Republic devoted more press time and space to reporting that war than any other country in the world did. The sympathies were obvious.
I hope Russia is not using the nuclear situation to pressure Iranian leaders this way. They better not!
Iranian leaders are practical and should see the futility of supporting Tajiks and Hazaras. Time for them to give up that idea and switch to supporting the Pashtuns of Islamic type. Iranian leaders would do much greater credit to themselves to wisely see the trends and take such action.
They should steer clear of Pashtun Nationalists, who are deadly for Afghanistan in my opinion, with their socialist-oriented ideas, devoid of religion.
Afghans don’t need their secular and sometimes Marxist ideology. These should stay confined to discussions in a few drawing rooms.
Iran should apprehend that this policy would rebound back to its own interest.
A more Islamic Afghan government would support them on their nuclear problem. A secular post-American Afghan government would be too mealy-mouthed to stand up to the West the way that a Pashtun Islamic one fearlessly would. But Teheran would have to earn its trust first. So better for Iran to forge ties and earn trust by reliable behavior now than to wait around til later and be dismissed as opportunists.
Teheran can always give huge financial aid to help the Hazaras, who have undeniably been badly treated. But political ties should be improved pronto with the right Pashtun groups.

Gen Beg,
But Talibans cannot rule Afghanistan; they are not accepted by the majority. Even Majority of the Pashtuns don’t want them. They were in charge for 5 years and nothing improved and worked.
As a matter of fact:
For 88 years British failed in Afghanistan
For 10 years Russians
For 5 years Pakistani and Arab Taliban
For almost 10 years NATO and Americans.
In fact, even Islam failed when Amir Abdul Rahman Khan converted Kafiristan now Nouristan to Islam in late 1800.
Do you have a solution? Lets talk about solutions and not cry over spilled milk sir.
If you think of disintegration of Afghanistan, then it is going to be disintegration of Pakistan due to unification of Pashtunistan and Baluchistan.
What is your solution sir?
My solution is:
Except Afghanistan to revert back to its glory days and Taliban to accept the condition as it was, obviously there will not be Caliphate ruling but a vital regional economical interest to counter India and in some degree China.
I here to listen sir.

In the whole article, there is not a single word abut the active involvement of the Pakistani Army, that is at the root of the trouble, seeking strategic depth in Afghanistan through its surrogates, sitting in the safe heavens well within Pakistan.
Not mentioning Pakistani Army’s double game, will not take the facts away and make it any easier for the Pakistani Army …. !

let the afghans decide they own future government with all power players invloved for unity nationally.
the northern alliance has always been drug sellers, traitors to the national afghan cause, it is a fact that the under the taliban unity was being restored.
the afghans need to be aware that even the pakistani army caused them irreversible loss and war crimes by helping the innocent ideologicalk led taliban being masscred after they had layed down they arms and being killed by the thousands in deserts confined in containers from kunduz.
there are no good helpers to the afghan nation presently, just interested partys creating perpetual war for no good reason except self ish interests. i wish the afghan nation the best and for justice to prevail, they must get the respect they deserve and help, then perhaps the prophecy of nematallah shah wali can take effect and divine help intervention for order to resume genuinely based on morality, and human deceny for all!

Abu Baqar,
What was the prophecy of Shah Nimotallah Vali???
I am interested because I visited his jewel of a shrine in Mahan. I can still envision the serene gardens before the tiled domes of the mausoleum.
I remember he made a lot of predictions about the future, back in the 1300s. Purportedly, he spoke about the overthrow of this last Shah.
Wasn’t Shah Nimatullah Vali given the title “The Persian Nostradamus”? There is a pamphlet or book of his prophecies; I remember inquiring at the shrine. But no luck.
What did the exalted Persian ascetic — who was supposedly was never seen to eat or sleep — say?
I imagine the forecast was not about Afghanistan as the modern country. Perhaps the prediction concerned the entire region of Khorasan and parts of –or all of — present-day Afghanistan?
If you don’t mind to say, that is.

I don’t trust that Gen. Beg. These guys normally lie when they open their mouths, seems they can not help it. The Taliban Boss Mullah Omar is a well know psychopath. Just try to be around Pak-Afgan borders. You will know that.

America can not leave Afghanistan without attaining the goal of cleaning the illeagal arms in the hand of so called freedom fighters .The international army will not give them opportunity to be known as victorious army of Islam. Afghanistan can exis as an Islamic nation if it will have an army having representation of all section of afghan society and trained to work under the rule of a well defined law . pak army is openly assisting the efforts of international army where as others including India also assisting the people of Afghanistan in forming a Govt. and army of their choice .It is of course a time taking process but no one can afford its unfulfilment including Iran and Pakistan, what to say about India and rest of the world .I hope situvation will not arise for the repitiition of Hiroshima and Nagasaki there .

Gen, Beg, Gen Hamid Gul and similar Pakistani ex-military brass and personas that have their delicate indoctrination and agendas for Afghanistan should now focus on Pakistan’s devastated “RATH of GOD” that 20 million Pakistanis are effected and will take years of recuperation.
Ask the Russians about their disintegration in post Afghanistan occupation when the disjointing of former USSR republics is the result of the bad karma that now Russian Federation will never be the super power once it enjoyed.

Hi
I read everyone comments and I found some are agree and take this as truth and some are not trusting the core of this article. The very fact about this article was revealed and everyone know this, there is nothing new to get from it. As Afghans we know and better can understand our country situation, but it is something funny that some Pakistan ex-ISI or military guys set and write their media propagandas, still as a Pashton I dis agree that Taliban should be brought into the government, they are already examined and I have seen them from very near. They are just Panjabi’s, Arab, Chechens, and some other regional countries. Pashtons are not supporting this Taliban the enemy of civilisation. Anytime these Pakistani EX military stuff write something is all directions given to them. Still Pakistan is our biggest enemy in that region they are the most violent and inhumane nature, how would they talk of peace and joint friendship with Afghanistan.
a link to their inhumane violent behaviour ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBSAy5Ixmec). where they brought such things into Afghanistan through Taliban, We are a civilised country with Victorias and old history than Pakistan. The only income of Pakistan in the past 30 years and still was the exporting terrorism in that region, still they are alive on American money help by the name of anti terrorism. Gen Beg, didn’t mention how and where the Taliban started from, who was behind the main core of the operation, America, British and Pakistan. A clear answer to this.. http://www.afghanmellat.eu/eng_articles/output/english_articles/Who%20are%20the%20Taliban-20100424-202134.pdf
We Afghans know better how to run our government and get rid of the all these problems. The international community can’t call on Pakistan as a main cause of the terrorism because at some point the need Pakistan to be helpful gateway for them in that region. Pakistan is very welcome in slavery option with the exchange of $. The same positions count for Iran, but they are burning more the tribal and ethnic matters in Afghanistan for divisions, but that a game of political matters. but pakistan game is more violent bringing in that region.
We don’t support any government if it is formed with Taliban and this was failed when they were running a cruel regime against humanity. I am asking would Taliban change their mind if they are brought into government, NO WAY. They are the virus of Islam they are not the real face of Islam. They are implement non-Islamic laws rather than Islamic laws. And please separate our freedom fighters from Taliban violent groups. We know our freedom fighters and their aims and we know Talibani violent aims in our country. Our freedom fighters are not hiding in the mountains of Tribal area ! these are ISI agents and officers hiding there.
I hope in this Ramadan these Gen. Beg speak more truth and let others to speak themselves out. If he is ignoring our comments and truthful messages.
Regards
Long live Afghanistan,
